CHRISTIAN

Last season: 6-5

Coach: Patrick Bugg, 1st year

Division: II

key players: Hunter Provience (TE-DE), Jake Davila (QB), Joey Merritt (WR-DB), Trent Yeagley (OL-DL), Justin Iagmin (OL-DL), Brady Bingham (LB), Aaron Shebloski (FB-LB) ), Aiden Hypes (RB-LB), Dylan Eades (WR-DB).

Scouting report: Seventeen starters return as part of a talented senior class. Davila can beat you with his arm or legs. He had 25 combined TDs, 2,245 yards last year passing-rushing. The 6-5, 230-pound Provience has soft hands and is getting Pac-12 attention. Merritt’s a fantastic athlete. Hypes will draw the bulk of the ground work.

LA JOLLA

Last season: 5-8

Coach: Tyler Roach, 6th year

Division: II

key players: Justin Scully (RB-DB), Colin Levinson (RB-LB), Ryan Weinberg (WR), Wallace Perry (DE-LB), Jackson Diehl (QB), Jett Thomas (OL), Finn Palmer (DT), Tommy Castronovo (DB).

Scouting report: Graduation hit the Vikings’ passing game hard, losing 3,266 yards passing, 31 TD passes and 2,141 yards receiving. Diehl, a junior, takes over at QB. While Vikings run a spread, Diehl will probably be brought along gradually. A three-year starter, Weinberg figures to be the go-to target. Thomas, a 6-4, 280-pound sophomore, is already receiving Pac-12 looks. Defense, with a talented front seven, figures to carry the Vikings early. Scully is the returning defensive MVP. Vikings get a break, moving out of rugged Western League.

MIRA MESA

Last season: 7-4

Coach: Aurelio Morales, 2nd year

Division: II

key players: Tyson Line (QB), Chris Brown (WR), Makei Thompson (RB-DB), Micah Vanta (LB), Isaiah Waldon (DB), Noah Chiw (DL), Korey Fortune (OL-DL), Sy Fanua (TE -LB), Chance Bell (TE).

Scouting report: The Marauders endured emotional 2021 season after head coach Chris Thompson passed away suddenly during the season. There is loads of talent at the skill positions. Thompson, who rushed for 993 yards last season, plays much bigger than 5-8, 165. Brown will stretch defenses with his sprinter speed. Line can wing it. The back seven defensively looks very good.

PATRICK HENRY

Last season: 10-3

Coach: Colby Davies, 1st year

Division: III

key players: Malachi Ghitman (QB), Hassan Noureddine (T-LB), Kory Symington (OL-DL), Aedyn Jamison (OL-DL), Vincent Li (WR), Roman Cephus (OL-DL), RJ Teixiera (OL-DL) ), Chris Lefall (Athlete), Caprece Pressley (RB-DB), Billy Blackwell (WR-DB).

Scouting report: Davies inherits a team coming off a Division IV title. He’ll run a spread and raves about Ghitman. The 6-3, 280-pound Symington is drawing Mountain West interest. Noureddine is a tackling machine.

SAN DIEGO

Last season: 8-3

Coach: Syd Reed, 1st year

Division: II

key players: Deandre Evans (RB-DE), Damien Whitfield (RB-DB), Puhlon Duncan (WR-DB), Casey Kotcher-Smith (QB), Matthew Hampton (WR-DB), Calvin Berkley (LB-WR), Tristian McElroy (OL-DT), Deante Gray (OT-DT), Kaden Petrucelli (WR-DB), Eric Walker-Forney (RB).

Scouting report: Reed comes over from Mar Vista. The Cavers will shift from the wing-T to the spread but don’t figure to be as pass-dominant, in part because of Walker-Forney’s skills. Berkley and Whitfield should lead the D.
