Scouting report: Army-Navy moves to the new Sunset League after being a member of the Pacific League since 2007. The Warriors will take the field with seven returning starters on offense and five on defense. Army-Navy has experience at key positions up front, but the team had limited summer work with young players being tested by a new scheme. Brunson Jr. took most of the snaps at QB last season as a freshman, but he will transition to a slot-RB as senior Dolla Protto and sophomore Carlos Ramirez will battle for signal-calling duties. Among the key newcomers are Landon Schrom, Jonah Tua and Lincoln Brunson with ANA coming off a 6-2 JV campaign.
Last season: 3-8
Coach: Nick Novak, 2nd year
Key players: Owen Tsay (QB), JD Class (TE), Dylan Pahler (PK), Cole Hurta (OL), Grayson Kennedy (RB), Mathew Orysiek (QB-DB), Steven Sun (LB-LS).
Scouting report: Maranatha Christian is also making the move from the Pacific League to the Sunset League and although the Eagles will field a young team, Novak says he’s encouraged by his team leadership and the way the players have bought in over the offseason. Tsay is a senior transfer from Poway, where he appeared in four games last season. Hurta, a senior, and Class, a sophomore, are returning all-league selections.
Last season: 1-8
Coach: Jake Passot, 1st year
Key players: None reported.
Scouting report: O’Farrell Charter enters its fourth season of varsity football hoping to make strides after securing its first-ever victory last season, a 24-12 nonleague win over Whittier Christian.
Last season: 2-7
Coach: Neil Breight, 2nd year
Key players: Gary Dillard III (RB), David Turner (RB), Andrew Fritzsch (RB), Jacob Knowlton (OL), Adam Ashcraft (OL), Cedar Prelle (OL), Logan Daichendt (QB-DB), Joel Valverde (QB) -DB), Ian Johnson (WR), Jack Busch (TE).
Scouting report: The Eagles were a fixture in the Pacific League until moving in 2019 to the Coastal League, where they perched for three seasons until becoming one of the charter members of the new Sunset League. Tri-City has 11 returning letters, including four defensive starters and three offensive starters. This year’s 31-player team roster features just three seniors, but Breight reports a lot of team unity on a squad that includes 13 sophomores and 10 freshmen. Daichendt and Valverde, both sophomores, will vie for the QB spot in addition to playing in the secondary.
