What to look for

Ahn chasing history

Torrey Pines sophomore Alyssa Ahn is off to a good start in defense of her section singles title; she won the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s national championship over the weekend. Since the San Diego Section began holding individual girls championships in 1974, no one has won the singles titles four years in a row. No boy has pulled off the feat, either.

Torrey Pines-Canyon Crest Academy rivalry

Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy are 3.7 miles apart. They’re also the heavy favorites to meet for the Open Division championship. Torrey Pines has four players ranked among the section’s top 16, CCA has three.

Talent returns

Six of the 11 players selected to last year’s All-CIF team are back. In addition to Ahn, Canyon Crest sophomore Chaeyule Kang and senior Lillia Finnegan return. The pair lost in the CIF doubles finals to CCA teammates who graduated.

Top matches: Torrey Pines at Canyon Crest, Sept. 20; Canyon Crest at Torrey Pines, Oct. 6.
